CATHAR HISTORY

Castle Map.jpg

Carcassonne

Famous for being the largest medieval fortress in Europe and now a world heritage site, a visit to Carcassonne is a must in our view - It is fairly touristy and can be very busy in high season, but we still think it’s worth it!

You pay to park, visit the inner chateaux and take the train tour if you wish, but other than that, you can wander through the steep cobbled streets, stop at one of the many cafes or shops, and just enjoy the ambience. It's said that the castle's shape inspired that of Cinderella's castle in Disneyland!

In summer you might even catch one of their concerts with international artists! See the cities tourism website here:

Cathar Ruins

Much more simple, but hauntingly beautiful are the impressive ruins of the strongholds which reinforced the defences of Carcassonne, called the sons of Carcassonne. Château d'Aguilar, Château de Puilaurens, Château de Quéribus and Château de Termes and the strikingly impressive citadel of Peyrepertuse.

There are also several Cathar Abbeys, Towns and Museums around the area that are well worth a visit - such as Abbaye de Fontfroide, a beautifully restored Cistercian monastery 40 minutes away from Embres.
